Transition to Solar/Renewable Energy Products

Segue to Solar Online Store has come a long way from a small solar dream the co-founders had back in 2000.

      The concept behind Segue to Solar was actually born as a result of the infamous electrical power outages in California back in 2000.   During the frequent brownouts the company co-founders began to question why alternative energy sources, like solar and wind generation, weren't utilized by local energy companies.   Did the utilities really need to inconvenience millions of people in the stifling summer heat? 

   The outages hit their area again, and by this time the co-founders were ready.  They had researched  ways to maintain the quality of their lives despite the power company.  In addition to their support of organizations such as the Sierra Club, National Resource Defense Council and Nature Conservancy, they joined the American and International Solar Energy Society and subscribed to Home Power magazine.  They researched some quality solar lights and installed them around the house to highlight the walkways and porch.  A solar motion-detector porch light that provided security despite the electric company was soon shining bright, even on cloudy days.  Soon a small solar backup system was up in the backyard to keep a small evaporative cooler working during the hot summer days and nights.

   From this they knew first-hand that saving energy through solar was a good idea.  By contacting manufacturers and on-line distributors, they found basic solar products that had good potential for consumers.   With so many products on the market they decided it would be best to test the ones they liked first for ease of use.  Segue to Solar insists on only selling quality products that have a good warranty, telephone support line and are U.S.-based.

   Segue to Solar has found that customers buy solar products for many reasons.  Some want to make a personal statement on practicing energy efficiency and conservation.  Just knowing that solar yard lights and lighted address signs are powered by the sun is enough to delight environmentally-conscious consumers.  For others solar energy is more of a security issue, such as the woman who installed a solar motion-detector light to illuminate her porch entry despite frequent power outages in the area.

   It's ironic to think that through the failure of power companies to tap into solar and wind resources a renewable energy business was started.   Distributing renewable energy products provides a great opportunity to spread the word about the distinct  advantages renewable energy has over power produced through oil and coal turbines.

   On Earth Day, 2005, Segue to Solar had hundreds of visitors stop by their Santa Monica Promenade booth to inquire about products like the 12-volt solar charger (for vehicles and boats) and the new solar backpack that keeps cell phones and small electronic appliances going.  There were also lots of comments about the unique custom-made solar water fountain on display.

   Like many people, they were inspired with the quote by Robert Redford, motion picture director, actor and a Trustee of the Board the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): "I think the environment should be put in the category of our national security.  Defense of our resources is just as important as defense abroad.  Otherwise what is there to defend?"
